How to get 4C Natural Hair into a puff: 4c Natural hair Journey Milestones

How long will it take before I can get my hair into a puff? When will i be able to get my hair into a puff? How long must I wait before I can get my hair into a puff?

4C Natural Hair Puff
I did it!!! I finally managed to get my 4c natural hair in a puff. It took me 7 months (since big chop).
I was so excited :)

What is a puff?

A puff is one of the most liked and celebrated hairstyles in the natural community. It is quite often the “go to” style for any natural haired girl. It is sort of like a top bun or high pony tail for curly / kinky girls.

It took me 7months since my Big chop to get my hair into a puff. And the literal process being my first time took about 20 minutes. After practising though and getting the hang of it though it will probably take no more than 10 or 15 minutes.

How do you get short / medium length natural 4C hair into a puff?

I personally have been anticipating the day I would be able to get my natural 4c hair into a puff. I have tried it before at about 5 months post big chop and was unsuccessful. I’m not sure if my technique was wrong or my hair was a bit too short anyway but I didn’t do it the same way I did it this past weekend.

During my initial attempt I basically just tried getting my hair into a puff with a shoelace without brushing it or using any extra product.
It was an instant failure.

This time I saw a very helpful video by. I will include this video below. Her technique was on a 3 day old twist out (mine was 3 days old too). She sprayed her hair with water (not the curly puff part but the part you will be tying down) and then brushed her hair up. She then applied some Ecostyler gel and brushed it up again. I followed her technique to the Tee (products and all). She then used an ouchless hair band. I didn’t have one so I made use of a shoelace again.

It worked!!! I have never been so thrilled or proud before. I totally LOVED how it came out. Needless to say, my fiancé too thought I looked stunning :)

What are the benefits of having a puff?
Hannah's Puff

There are many benefits to having a puff. Here are a few of my favourites:
It keeps your hair off your shoulders (if it’s long enough to get there) and is somewhat of a protective style.
It is a quick go to style when you have an old twist out or braid out etc.
It looks professional and formal which is something I struggled to get with my TWA.
It is important to note that as with many other hairstyles this shouldn’t be done too tight or too often in order to avoid damage to your hairline especially.
