How to wash relaxed hair with video

How do I wash my relaxed hair? How can i wash my relaxed hair at home? What are some tips on watching your own hair at home?

Washing relaxed hair is pretty much the same as washing natural hair. There are some tips to help make the process simpler as well as suggested products to use.

Top 5 Tips for washing your relaxed hair

1. Don't overdo it with the clarifying shampoo's. Clarifying shampoos strip your hair of oils and dirt which is good for once or twice a week. Don't wash your hair with clarifying shampoo on a daily bases or you could end up with dried out hair. For in between washes, co-wash making use of a conditioner in place of a shampoo (any cheap one will do) and use it in the same way as you would a shampoo.

2. Have a good moisturiser to apply to your hair afterwords. Also note that straight after a wash is a good time to add a good oil as an insulator to keep in moisture. Castor oil is a good insulator especially if you will be having your hair in a protective style and don't mind it being a bit greasy. Coconut oil is a great alternative for less weighed down hair with the same moisture locked in benefit.

3. Try to avoid tangles. Don't rub your hair vigorously causing knot ups or tangles. Be gentle and you'll loose less strands.

4. After washing your hair try air drying if you can. The less heat - the better. For straighter hair after drying try air drying your hair in a wrap or bun. For a curlier look air dry your hair in plaits, twists or Bantu knots.

5. Read your conditioner and shampoo bottles - you want to minimize using products containing mineral oil as much as possible. The closer "mineral oil" is to the front of the contents list the higher the amount of it in your product so do take note.

How to relax your own hair - With video

Do I need to visit a hair salon to relax my hair? Is it possible to relax my hair at home? How do I relax my own hair?

Anything is possible!!!! In this day and age with helpful tools like YOUTUBE nothing is impossible. DIY is a thing of the future (and present). There are tons of inspirational videos out there demonstrating how to relax your own hair - it definitely is possible. As with anything else, it will take some practice to perfect it but if you work hard at it, concentrate and make use of all sorts of tips, you will definitely have the hang of it in no time.

Tips for relaxing your own hair

  1. Remember; relaxer contains strong chemicals that could burn you! Make sure that you have your scalp and edges well protected and more importantly KEEP YOUR EYES SAFE! Relaxer has the potential to make you go blind so be as safe as you possibly can.
  2. For the first couple of times it may be a good idea to at least have a friend or family member with you to help out. The person can help you relax your hair (always easier with an extra pair of hands) be an extra pair of eyes especially in those hard to see places (maybe guiding you about areas you may have missed, making better paths etc) or just on standby should you need them to pass you anything, wipe a relaxer spill or motivate you.
  3. Make sure that you have all your tools, products, towels and mirrors ready before you begin - the last thing you need is to be running around looking for something with a head full of relaxer or water dripping down your face.
  4. Open your product jars (shampoo, lotion, Vaseline, oils etc) before hand in order to avoid fumbling. Also make sure to put them in a safe / good place in order to prevent knocking them over.
  5. Relax your hair while it's dirty. The dirtier the better. Washing your hair before strips your scalp of oils that could help protect you during the chemical process. Be sure to avoid washing your hair at least 7 - 10 days before relaxing it. In addition to this, don't scratch your head AT ALL no matter how intense the itch may be for as long as possible before relaxing your hair and during the relaxing process. Scratching your head will lead to cuts or scratches that will burn badly when in contact with the relaxer. Trust me, it's best to avoid this at all costs.

Can I dye Relaxed / Permed hair?

Is it possible to dye relaxed / permed hair? How do you dye relaxed / permed hair? Is it safe to dye relaxed / permed hair without breakage? How long after getting a relaxer / perm can I dye my hair?

Relaxed / permed hair is chemically treated and by dying it you are chemically treating it again. One of the risks you run by dying your chemically treated hair - without the correct knowledge, is damaging it by over processing it.

The following tips might help you minimize the damage to your hair assisting in avoiding breakage and hair loss.

Wait at least 2 to 3 weeks after relaxing / perming your hair or getting a touch up to dye your hair.
Never dye your hair in the same week or on the same day that you get a relaxer or perm done.
Be sure to give your hair extra TLC both before and after getting a relaxer / per and dye.
Treat your hair to extra moisture by deep conditioning and moisturizing and sealing the weeks before the chemical treatments.
Get a protein treatment done before or after the chemical treatments to try and rejuvenate your hair,

How to soften new growth - How to stretch your relaxer to avoid breakage

How can I avoid breakage or damage to my relaxed hair? How can I stretch my relaxer? How can I limit chemicals on my relaxed hair? How can i soften my new growth?

Stretching your relaxer is one of the ways to help the health of your hair. Chemical processes, whether dying the hair, perming the hair, relaxing the hair or bleaching the hair all naturally result in pressure and unavoidable strain on the hair. This often leads to breakage or excessive shedding. Stretching is one of the major way of minimising this damage and maintaining the health of your hair resulting in positive hair growth and a reduction in hair loss and breakage.

Stretching - broadening the space between your relaxers - can be extremely hard when you're trying to cope with and manage your new growth. It's often the strain and hard work of maintaining and blending the new growth that leads to pressure to get another relaxer as soon as you can.

The video above demonstrates how to soften the new growth in order to stretch your relaxer longer. If you can get this right, you should be one step closer to that beautiful long AND healthy hair you desire :)

How to do a Silk / Saran / Dominican blow out: Dominican / Silk / Saran blow out on relaxed hair

How do I do a silk / saran / Dominican blow out on relaxed hair? How can I get my relaxed hair pin straight? How do I get my relaxed hair straight with body and movement?

A Dominican wrap is one of the best ways of achieving the straight and body filled hair you may desire. It might seem complex and hard to figure out but in actuallity as with everything else hair related - it's not that hard.

This video shows a demonstration of getting a silk / saran / Domican blow out done and dusted as well as the results.

How to wrap relaxed hair: How to sleep with relaxed hair

How do I wrap my relaxed hair? What should I do to my relaxed hair before bed? How should my relaxed hair be under my scarf?

Relaxed hair, like all hair in general, needs to be handled carefully and gently in order to avoid damage.

Why wrap my hair?

hen we sleep, tossing and turning in bed as well as the material of our linen could impact the condition and health of our hair. By wrapping your hair at night and keeping it neatly tucked away under a silk scarf, you are aiding in preventing unnecessarily damage to your hair.

Another awesome use for wrapping the hair is to straighten it naturally without damaging it with heat unnecessarily. Wrapping your hair allows for a straighter look and hairstyle when the wrap comes out. You can wet wrap your hair allowing it to dry straighter, dry wrap it when straight to prevent frizz or curling or roller wrap your hair allowing for a lot of body and a straighter look (these will be explained in other posts).

This video will clearly demonstrate in detail and explain how to wrap your hair :)

Is it possible to transition from relaxed hair to natural without the big chop? How do I transition to natural hair without the big chop? Is it possible to avoid the big chop while transitioning? Can I go back to natural hair from relaxed hair without cutting my relaxed hair off?

As an African or African American lady one of our major concerns is retaining length and growing our hair beautifully. Due to the texture of our hair this can sometimes be an extremely hard task. When it comes to making the decision of going from relaxed or chemically treated hair to fully natural hair you may find yourself facing the idea of the gruesome big chop.

The video below gives you tips and advice in helping you to transition to natural hair without having to cut off your valued length. Hope it helps!

How to relax your own hair - the day of your relaxer

How do I relax my hair? Is it okay to relax my own hair? Is it safe to relax my hair myself? What do I do on the day of my relaxer? What do I do before relaxing my hair?

It's important to watch this video in order to make sure that you're as clued up as possible before relaxing your hair in order to avoid damaging your hair. Dealing with winter hair breakage - BE PREPARED : Turn to braids

My new hairdo
How do I deal with winter hair breakage? How can I keep my hair healthy during winter? How can I prevent my hair breaking in winter? How do braids protect your hair in winter?

Winter weather can be an extremely stressful and hectic season not only for your wardrobe but for your hair too. The air that comes a long with winter is prone to drying out your hair resulting in less moisture and more breakage. Personally, for me it seems like winter brings a delay in my hair growth or slows down my hair growth process. I see this as being similar to the fact that grass, plants, flowers, etc all GROW better in summer and spring too - NOT IN WINTER OR FALL.

How to deal with Nape Breakage: hair journey setbacks (video)

How do you deal with hair breakage? How do you deal with nape breakage in relaxed or natural hair? How can I prevent hair breakage in relaxed hair? How do I deal with nape breakage? How do you deal with setbacks while on your hair journey?

Hair breakage is one of most horrible things to experience especially when you're on your hair journey and trying to grow out your hair.

I recently suffered a setback with regards to nape breakage and found it extremely upsetting.
I've resorted to Castor oil treatment (although I have been using Castor oil as part of my usual regime) and have started trying out DR Miracles nape and temple balm.
I'm hoping to see some positive results really soon.

This is my first winter on my hair journey so I think the weather might have something to do with my hair damage.

Upon searching for some help and answers with regards to my hair breakage I came across a video by Tamekans. This video deals with tips on how to manage and prevent hair breakage especially in the nape area.

Hope it helps!

How often should I wash my (relaxed or chemically treated) hair?

How often should I wash my hair? How often should relaxed hair be washed? How long should I wait before washing my hair? How much hair washing is enough?

When it comes to washing your hair there is only one rule to keep in mind - Do what works for YOUR hair! With that being said there are a few tips worth taking note of when it comes down to how often to wash your hair (whether you are a relaxed head, completely natural or have chemically treated or dyed hair).

(VIDEO) Can 4z / 4c relaxed hair grow past SL (shoulder length) or APL (armpit length) FAST?

Can 4c/4z hair grow? How long can 4c/4z hair grow? Will I be able to grow my 4c/4z relaxed hair? Is it harder to grow 4c/4zrelaxed hair? Are their any successful 4c/z relaxed heads?

Yes! Yes! Yes! 4c/4z Relaxed hair can grow!!! There is no restrictions or "discrimination" when it comes to relaxing your hair and growing it out.
I went from SL to APL in around a month and you can too!

Take a look at my quick summary video on my hair going from SL to APL in a month.

When I first started my hair journey (not so long ago) I was really worried about 'the odds' being stacked against me and my hair due to my extremely course hair type. My hair takes the terms nappy, tightly coiled and course to the extreme (in my opinion) and every inspirational girl I came across online seemed to have a better thread of hair or their hair which was more loosely curled or finer then mine was and in my mind that was the reason why they were able to grow their hair so long.

I needed to do my research - and I did. I found some really awesome girls online who had been on their hair journeys for a really long time and hosted highly informative sites or blogs and were ready to offer help and motivation - girls with 4c/4z hair types just like mine!

In my next post I will provide you with a list on a bunch of girls with really course hair types who's hairs growing to great lengths (I'm talking past APL (armpit length) and BSL (bra strap length).

Hope you all motivated and hyped up for the best journey of your life!!!

How to start a hair journey - How to start caring for and growing your (relaxed or chemically treated) hair

How do I start a hair journey? What is a hair journey? What do I need to start a hair journey? Why should I start a hair journey?

Deciding on starting a hair journey can be one of the most exciting decisions you could ever make.
It is a huge decision because it could ultimately change you and the way you look at yourself in the long run.
On the plus side, a hair journey can be filled with fun, challenges and growth; both as a person and with regards to your hair.

What is a hair journey?
A hair journey is basically the documentation of a process. Deciding to start a hair journey is a very big decision. It means that you're deciding to start growing your hair or/and keep it healthy.
Growing your hair and / or keeping it healthy is a responsibility; it takes a lot of commitment, self-motivation and dedication.
It may seem like an easy thing to do but making a decision to grow or care for your hair is one that takes a lot of work. In order to keep your hair growing, keep it healthy and avoid setbacks you have got to stick to caring for your hair. It is not just something that you can start doing and then forget about it after a week if you get bored or tired. It's something that needs consistency.

A hair journey is a collection of thoughts, pictures, videos, etc (anything that works for you) documenting, recording and showing your "journey" to the hair you want.

What do I need to start a hair journey?

In order to start a hair journey you need to have a few basics. You can read about the basic products and hair stuff you'll need here.
You'll also need to decide exactly what your hair goals are; Is your goal to have longer hair? Is your goal to have healthier hair? Is your goal to have less hair breakage?
Are you trying to grow relaxed or chemically treated hair?
You need to set some long term and short term goals before starting your hair journey so that you can monitor your progress towards them.
The main thing you need to start a hair journey is determination, commitment and motivation.

How do I start a hair journey?

Once you have everything you need to start your hair journey, the first thing you need to do is decide how you will record your progress; take pictures, start a physical or online journal, make videos, etc. Take your starting pics or videos so that you can monitor and measure your progress throughout your journey.
Be sure to read up as much as possible on your hair with regards to your goals. If you plan on growing your hair or keeping it healthy read up a much as you can about growing your hair or keeping it healthy. There is a vast supply of information online. By finding articles, blogs, websites and inspiration online you will be able to find all the information you need to get the best hair you could possibly have.

A hair journey is easy to begin. It's sticking to it and seeing it through that is the hard part. If you remember your goals and stay positive you will be able to stay motivated enough to never give up.

Basics for growing long & healthy (relaxed / dyed / chemically treated) hair : Hair growth tips

What do I need to start my hair journey? What are the basics needed for caring for my hair? What products are important for my hair journey? What do I need to grow my hair?

When it comes to starting a hair journey or making the decision to start caring for or growing your hair there might be a lot gong through your mind. Maybe you’re confused about where to start, maybe you don’t have tons of money to spend on different hair products or maybe you’ve experienced a failed hair journey and would like to avoid making the same mistakes and thus being successful this time. This article is a great place to start.

You don’t need lot’s of money to start a hair journey or to even start caring for your hair. If you’re planning on relaxing your hair and caring for it, relaxers really don’t cost that much and can be bought almost anywhere. Caring for your hair will not cost much either whether you’re natural or a relaxed head like I am.

This article contains the top 10 things you will need to start your hair journey or in it. These are a must in my hair care program and should become a big part of yours too. They are not at all costly but form a basis for healthy hair and speedy hair growth.

1.       Wide toothed comb

I can not go a day without my wide toothed comb. The wide toothed comb  can be purchased in all places selling hair products or accessories or stores with a hair care section.

It is just like any other comb except the teeth which are used for combing the hair are further apart spaced. This is good for many reasons:

·         It protects your hair from unnecessary breakage caused by thinner teeth.
·         With the spacing being further a part you will loose less hair in the combing process and due to the fact that hair seems not to grow when breakage appears (because your hair breaks off faster than it grows causing it to appear not to grow) by minimizing hair breakage and hair loss you will experience faster hair growth.
·         This comb can be a good help for de-tangling hair when wet as it is less damaging on your hair which is already more sensitive and prone to breakage when wet.

     2.       Silk scarf or stocking cap

Ever since starting my hair journey In October 2011 I have hardly ever gone to bed without my silk scarve or stocking cap. These are used to cover your hair at night when going to sleep. I use either but a silk scarve is likely to be even better for your hair.

You could wrap your hair in a silk scarf and use a stocking cap over to secure it and prevent it from slipping off your head while you’re a sleep. These are a must or the following reasons:

·         Friction is another factor when it comes to hair breakage. If your hair is rubbing against your bedding or pillow it can cause it to break. This can be avoided if your hair is covered while you sleep.
·         Hair can also break if it gets hooked while turning during sleep. Having your hair tied down or wrapped under a silk scarf or stocking cap can avoid this.
·         You can also use silk pillow cases or bedding to sleep on as an alternative to a silk scarf at night as these are less likely to hook onto or pull your hair.

3.       Ouch-less hair ties

These are hair-bands or hair-ties without the metal or silver bit on them. The hard bit in scrunchies / hair-ties sometimes hook to your hair or tug on it resulting in unnecessarily tangling or breakage of the hair. Finding and investing in hair-ties or scrunchies without this part will allow your hair protection from this. Elastic bands also have a tendency to tangle in the hair resulting in breakage.

4.       Shampoo

A clean scalp results in faster hair growth. In order to ensure that your pores are not clogged by dirt, excessive oils or hair products it is important to wash your hair at least once a week.

     5.       Conditioner

A good conditioner is needed to help your hair maintain a balance with regards to lost moisture and protein. Deep conditioning is important for the hair.
There are many good deep conditioners. My favourite is Organic Root Stimulator Replenishing Pak. It allows your hair to be revived with a great balance of protein and moisture all in one treatment.

Organic Root Stimulator Mayonnaise is also great as a treatment but falls more towards a protein conditioner.

A standard rinse out conditioner can also be used as an alternative to a shampoo while allowing your hair to enjoy added moisture provided by the water.

   6.       Moisturiser

These can be purchased almost anywhere. They are filled with moisture which your hair thrives on. Be sure to check the ingredients at the back of the pack as certain products such as mineral oil are plentiful but not necessarily good for your hair. The further up the list the product is on the ingredients at the back of the pack, the more of it the product contains so be careful!

7.       Essential oils

Essential oils are great for your hair and very affordable. My favourites are Castor oil, coconut oil and carrot oil. Coconut oil is especially cheap and just awesome for the hair. If you’re out of moisturiser or can’t afford one dampening your hair with water and applying coconut or any other oil to seal in the moisture can be just as great. Sometimes it even works better then an ordinary moisturiser due to the fact that it’s completely natural.

     8.       Water spray
Water spray will totally cost you nothing and allow your hair to constantly feel refreshed and moisturised. Water is one of the best sources of moisture for your hair end will result in healthy hair which will be able to grow to as long as you’d like it to grow.

Once you have a water spary you could also add in some of your own "special ingredients" depending on what works well with your hair. Think of things such as glycerine (which helps attract moisture ti keep your hair moisturized), coconut oil (which is a light natural oil which norishes and strengthens hair) or grape seed oil (an awesome essential oil).

9. A camera, web cam or camera phone
The most important part of a hair journey is monitoring and measuring your progress. Not only does this allow you to see how far you've come and how hard you've worked on your hair it also allows you to stay motivated. If you can see how well your hair's doing and how much better or longer your hair is compared to when you initially started, you will be able to stay motivated.
Remember to note all the products that work on your hair (because everyones hair is different) , changes in your hair (good and bad), different hairstyles, etc. Document everything about your hair on your journey to great hair. Not only will that be fun and allow you to keep every memory but it will also be a great help.

10. Motivation and Dedication!

The hardest part of caring for or growing your hair isn't starting to care for your hair or grow it but sticking to it. Sticking to the "program" takes a lot of motivation and dedication. It takes a lot of hard work to stay focused and not give up even if you get to a point where it seems like your hair growth is slowing down, you experience a little breakage or experience a setback. You need to be motivated and encouraged.

By looking to find others who are also involved in a hair journey, others who have similar goals or by tracking and monotoring your journey to see just how far you've come you will be able to see that you're doing really well.

If you need any support, have any questions or would just like to chat don't hesitate to contact me! I've been on my journey for a while now and would be more then willing to help. Grab those basics and get caring for your hair.
Good luck!!!!
